Terraform CI/CD architecture for an e-wallet AWS platform

Overview

How Terraform, Jenkins, and Bitbucket were used to standardize AWS infrastructure delivery across staging and production for an e-wallet / financial technology platform.

The project focused on helping an e-wallet / financial technology company move toward a more repeatable AWS infrastructure delivery model. The customer wanted staging and production environments to follow a consistent deployment pattern while still fitting into their existing engineering workflow.

Terraform was used as the Infrastructure-as-Code layer, with Jenkins and Bitbucket forming the CI/CD and version-control workflow around infrastructure changes.

Requirement

The customer already used Bitbucket for source control and Jenkins for automation. The requirement was not to replace that workflow, but to integrate Terraform into it so infrastructure changes could be reviewed, planned, approved, and applied in a controlled way across staging and production.

My Contribution

  • Implemented Terraform for approximately 80-90% of AWS resources across the project scope.
  • Acted as an implementation partner and advisor for Jenkins pipeline integration.
  • Worked jointly with the customer on Bitbucket-to-Jenkins integration.
  • Helped standardize infrastructure delivery across staging and production.
  • Helped design a repeatable deployment approach using Terraform remote state, environment separation, and CI/CD workflow controls.

Architecture

The architecture connected source-controlled Terraform code to Jenkins pipelines, then separated staging and production execution paths with dedicated remote state and environment-specific deployment controls.

High-level Terraform-based AWS delivery workflow

Workflow

Infrastructure changes were managed through source control and routed through Jenkins pipeline stages such as formatting, validation, planning, approval, and controlled apply or destroy operations.

Staging and production followed separated execution paths so the team could keep environment intent clear and reduce accidental cross-environment changes.

Technology

  • Terraform
  • Jenkins
  • Bitbucket
  • Amazon EC2
  • Amazon RDS
  • Amazon VPC
  • VPC Peering
  • ElastiCache Redis
  • Amazon EKS
  • Amazon S3
  • DocumentDB
  • OpenSearch
  • AWS Transfer Family

Approach

The implementation emphasized reusable Terraform structure, environment-specific configuration, remote state separation, and CI/CD workflow controls. This helped make infrastructure changes easier to review and safer to promote across environments.

Lessons

Terraform provides the repeatable infrastructure layer, but the surrounding workflow matters just as much. Clear reviews, approval gates, state separation, and environment boundaries help teams operate IaC with more confidence.

Outcome

The project helped establish a repeatable Terraform-based AWS delivery model across staging and production, integrated with the customer’s existing Jenkins and Bitbucket workflow.
